How Much iPhone Storage Do You Need? 256GB vs. 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB
Compare iPhone storage upgrades with iCloud costs and see whether 256GB is enough for photos, apps, and games.
New iPhones are getting more expensive
The iPhone upgrade season has arrived again, and careful buyers may notice that higher-storage models cost quite a bit more this year. One reason is the rising price of storage chips: a 2TB iPhone 18 Pro Max now costs about $2,499 in the U.S.
With storage getting more expensive, should you buy more built-in storage or a smaller iPhone paired with iCloud?
What a storage upgrade really costs
Here, “memory” means the phone’s storage capacity. The comparison starts with the 256GB model and uses Apple’s U.S. pricing for the iPhone 18 Pro Max as a reference. Prices are before sales tax and may change.
Going from 256GB to 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB costs $200, $600, or $1,200 more upfront. After three years, the extra storage usually does not retain the full price difference when you sell the phone. For a rough estimate, this comparison assumes that only 20% of the extra capacity premium remains in resale value:
| Upgrade | Upfront premium | Estimated resale premium after 3 years | Actual 3-year extra | Average per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB → 512GB | $200 | $40 | $160 | about $4 |
| 256GB → 1TB | $600 | $120 | $480 | about $13 |
| 256GB → 2TB | $1,200 | $240 | $960 | about $27 |
A 256GB iPhone plus iCloud costs less
If photos and videos are what fill your phone, a smaller iPhone paired with iCloud may be more economical. This table compares only the extra storage cost over three years:
| iPhone storage upgrade | Hardware upgrade cost | VS | iCloud+ reference plan | Three-year iCloud cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB → 512GB | $160 | 200GB | about $108 | |
| 256GB → 1TB | $480 | 2TB shared by two people | about $180 per person | |
| 256GB → 2TB | $960 | 2TB for one person | about $360 |
iCloud does not offer a 1TB plan, so the 1TB comparison uses a two-person 2TB family plan. Over three years, the iCloud options cost less than paying for the equivalent storage upgrade. A 256GB iPhone paired with iCloud is the more economical choice under these assumptions.
If you regularly play large mobile games, however, more local storage can still be worth it.
If you use iCloud, keep this in mind
After turning on iCloud Photos, also turn on Optimize iPhone Storage. The iPhone keeps thumbnail versions locally while full-resolution originals stay in iCloud.
Also, iCloud Photos is a sync feature, not an independent backup. If you delete a photo on the iPhone, it is also deleted from iCloud and other devices using the same library.

Clean up regularly to control your iCloud bill
iCloud can store photos and videos, but the library will keep growing. The price also rises with the plan: 6TB costs about $1,080 over three years, while 12TB costs about $2,160. Whether you choose a larger iPhone or iCloud, regular cleanup can delay the next upgrade.
iPhone’s built-in cleanup tools are limited when it comes to similar bursts. LessPhoto can group similar photos for comparison and batch deletion.
Sharing a 2TB plan between two people and cleaning up regularly can keep the storage budget under control.
